PHILADELPHIA, Pa., USA: The American Association of Orthodontists held its 113th annual meeting May 4 to 6 at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Thousands of orthodontists and orthodontic team members gathered to take part in the various educational and social offerings. Those who came to learn new orthodontic techniques had plenty of educational options.

From the doctor sessions to the staff seasons to the featured speakers series, if it was related to orthodontics, it was probably covered.

Educational sessions included topics such as “New Frontiers in the Early Treatment of Class III Malocclusion,” “Missing Maxillary Lateral Incisors: New Procedures and Indications for Space Closure,” “Incorporating New Technologies and Advances to Orthognathic Surgery” and “Tips & Tricks for the Digital Office,” among much more.

Other topics included craniofacial anomalies, lingual orthodontics and facial soft-tissue changes in orthodontics.

Highlights included “The Patient Experience Trumps Clinical Expertise,” with Dr. Fred Joyal, who offered practical steps for enhancing the patient experience and turning your dental team into an effective dental marketing team; and “Orthodontic and Orthopedic Treatment in the Mixed Dentition,” presented by Dr. Roberto Lima-Filho.

Staff sessions included a range of topics from orthodontic digital photography, staff training, risk management, infection prevention, fee collection and more.

The featured speaker series included a free session from best selling author Dr. Barry Sears, whose presentation, “Why We Gain Weight, Get Sick and Age Faster,” explored the changes in the American diet in the past 40 years that have turned on ancient inflammatory genes that are the underlying cause of our obesity and health-care crisis.

The AAO also welcomed best-selling author and TV talk show host Dr. Laura Berman, host of “In the Bedroom” on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and a regular guest on “The Dr. Oz Show.” She spoke on “The Passion Prescription: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Body and Relationship Vibrant and Exciting for Life.”

To spice things up, there were social activities each day, including a Fun Run & Walk and the AAO Foundation Breakfast, which offered honors to key volunteers for their work within the AAOF. The AAO Gala offered delicious food, fun and conversation with friends and colleagues within the AAO.

For orthodontists or team members who came looking to stock up on supplies or to look for fun new products to bring home to the office, the exhibit hall was brimming with new technology and other treats.

Many generous samples and freebies were offered in the exhibit hall. The meeting offered a great chance to try new toothpaste, prophy paste and floss. Companies offering giveaways included DMG, Sesame Communications, Plak Smacker, Dolphin, Orapro, Opal Orthodontics, Colgate, flossFish, Dr. Fresh, Tops Ortho, Universal Orthodontic, Ziegler Practice Transitions, OrthoEase, OrthoBanc, BracketEars and the Dental Assisting National Board.
