COLOGNE, Germany: This morning, German Minister of Health Hermann Gröhe opened the 37th International Dental Show (IDS), together with Dr Martin Rickert, the Chairman of the Association of the German Dental Industry. In his speech, Gröhe highlighted the significance of the trade show for the dental and health industries.

IDS is a major event in the Cologne trade fair calendar and has been growing for years in terms of the attendance of both exhibitors and visitors. While visitor numbers did not quite reach 140,000 in 2015, the organisers expect this figure to be surpassed this year.

During the opening ceremony, Gröhe praised the ever future-oriented ideas presented at the show for the benefit of the patient and the participating industry, especially in Germany. This view to the future has defined the concept of IDS since its initiation.

He further stated that IDS facilitates knowledge exchange at an outstanding level that has led to significant improvements in the provision of dental care. For example, Germany has seen great advances in preventative dentistry for children aged 3 and under and the elderly. As ageing of the population is a growing problem globally, it is imperative that all IDS participants pursue the opportunities that current science is providing, Gröhe emphasised.
