COLOGNE, Germany: In the presence of local and international dental media, representatives of organiser Koelnmesse, the Association of the German Dental Industry (VDDI) and other professional bodies yesterday welcomed attendees to the 2017 International Dental Show (IDS). The 37th edition of the world’s largest dental showcase will be officially opened this morning by the German Minister of Health Hermann Gröhe. Over 140,000 visitors are expected for the event, which is showcasing new products and innovations by over 2,300 dental companies from all around the world over the next five days.

Being held at the Koelnmesse fairgrounds in Cologne since 1992, the show has proven to be the leading business and communication platform for the international dental community, Koelnmesse Chief Operating Officer Katharina C. Hamma said, as evidenced by over 70 per cent of the exhibiting companies being from outside Germany. The growth in exhibitors has resulted in another increase in the exhibition space, which now spans six halls and an area of more than 160,000 m2. Most exhibitors are again from Italy, the US, South Korea, China and France. They are presenting the state of the art in equipment for dental practices and laboratories.

“The high number of exhibitors again underlines the position of IDS as the international event in dentistry. There is no other place in the world where the industry shows its strength, diversity and innovative character like here in Cologne,” VDDI Chairman Dr Martin Rickert said.

President of the German Dental Association Dr Peter Engel added that digitalisation continues to be a major focus of IDS. Whether through digital networking, personalised treatment or computer-aided diagnostics and therapy, there are plenty of areas in dentistry in which modern technology can offer benefits for clinicians and patients, he remarked.

“We welcome and support technological advancements that help to make the everyday work of dentists easier and optimise diagnosis and treatment,” he added.

Opening today with Trade Dealers’ Day, IDS runs until Saturday. In addition to the large-scale exhibition, visitors will be able to participate in a diverse and interesting accompanying programme that includes the established Speakers’ Corner, held in the passage between Halls 4 and 5 this year, as well as the recently introduced Career Day and Know-How Tours.
