BIOLASE is currently showcasing its two new dental lasers, the Waterlase Express all-tissue laser and the Epic Pro soft-tissue diode laser, at the International Dental Show (IDS) in Cologne. To learn more about the first device, which features the company’s fifth-generation laser technology and represents the new foundation of BIOLASE’s strategy to expand all-tissue laser use in dentistry, Dental Tribune Online met with President and CEO Harold C. Flynn on-site.

Dental Tribune Online: Mr Flynn, BIOLASE seems to have gone through some instable times regarding its leadership in the past. What is the current situation in this regard?
Harold C. Flynn: Although there has been some change in the management in the past, I am very excited about the management of the company today and believe that we have now a good and stable foundation and a great leadership team to manage the growth into the future. Over the course of the last year and a half, we have been building up a leadership team with a strong commercial background, like Holger Arens, who has over 15 years of experience in the business of selling capital equipment, and our new Chief Dental Officer, Dr Samuel Low.

What would you define as the main future strategies of BIOLASE with regard to the international dental market?

In achieving our overall aim of bringing lasers to every dentist worldwide, we are focusing on a multiple-level product portfolio that also helps our distributor partners to be successful in their respective countries. It allows us to have the right products at different price points for every market throughout the world. One can start out with a dental laser costing as little as €3,000 and go to our high-end Waterlase iPlus at well over €50,000—each product has its own value to clinicians in their individual practices. As dentists advance through the portfolio, they become lifelong customers.

BIOLASE recently released its new laser system Waterlase Express in the US. Here at IDS, the product has been unveiled internationally. Could you please tell us more about this all-tissue laser system?
With the launch of this laser system, we aim to make implementation of laser technology even easier and provide dentists with new business opportunities. The new Waterlase Express is one-quarter of the size and one-third of the weight and far less expensive than the iPlus system. It is focused on being easy to learn and use and providing more affordable entry to dentists. Additionally, Waterlase Express features more than 120 animated videos that guide the user step by step through every procedure on a tablet, with which everybody is familiar today. In contrast to other older devices, on which the user had to make many adjustments, Waterlase Express offers the dentist the most effective presettings developed by experts and the user makes fine adjustments himself or herself.

IDS is the best opportunity to expose our new products to the international market that will help expand the penetration of lasers overall—the minimally invasive Waterlase Express and Epic Pro, which really stands alone among diode lasers, as it is unsurpassed in terms of cutting control and automation.
