Stratasys is one of the industry leaders in 3-D printing worldwide, a position achieved through its emphasis on continual innovation and high quality. At IDS, the company has premiered its new J700 3-D dental printer, a device that produces clear aligners at an unprecedented rate. Dental Tribune Online spoke with Eric Erickson, Dental Business Manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Stratasys, about the product on-site.

Dental Tribune Online: What made the company decide to design a printer specifically for the creation of clear aligners?
Eric Erickson: The market for clear aligners is set to expand greatly this year because Align Technology’s patents are due to expire, which has encouraged many new and existing companies to act quickly. The new J700 is the successor of the J750, and it is completely optimised for printing aligner arches in an incredibly fast and accurate manner. The J750 was designed for medical modelling and not clear aligners specifically, but its excellent cutting architecture was something that we wanted to incorporate into this new printer.

It has been reported that the printer is able to produce upwards of 400 clear aligner moulds each day. How is the quality of these moulds maintained with such a high processing rate?
Yes, the J700 can produce 55 moulds in less than 3 hours, which works out to 440 per day. It is an extremely high print volume. The device prints with a higher layer thickness because the droplet size is much smaller, producing a higher resolution than ever before and ensuring that there is no sacrifice in quality.

What other products is Stratasys displaying at IDS?
We have the Objet Eden260VS Dental Advantage 3-D printer, which is built for medium-sized and smaller dental laboratories that do not necessarily need the production capacity of the J700. It is able to work with a number of different resins and can still print in reasonably large quantities.

The Objet30 Dental Prime is another printer we have designed for smaller laboratories with lower volume production needs, but that still want to be able to print in the same range of resins that the Dental Advantage can.

Our Dental Selection devices can print in multiple materials at a time and multiple colours, allowing for one model to have a blend of materials and colours. This means that something like a denture model can be printed and tested on the patient to simulate its effect ahead of actual production or that a maxillofacial model of a patient can be created ahead of a full-jaw reconstruction and practised on before surgery, for example. This is a feature that Stratasys has worked hard to provide dentists with and is unique to our company.

What does Stratasys enjoy most about IDS?
Simply put, it is a great show. Every time we come here, we have a larger stand with more people working, more visitors coming to see our range of products, and there are more events, like the Speakers’ Corner. It is a great way to meet our current and future customers.
